Jesus
instructs us on how to survive the storms that crash
into our lives by hearing and obeying His word.
If we build our lives on the priorities He has given
us in Scripture, we will have the strength and stability
we need not only to survive but to thrive.
We need to build according to His blueprint.

The
Generous King
August
30
This is
the final account of David found in I Samuel.
In this text, several actions show how he really
is a man after God's heart, and is very distinguishable
from Saul. David finds strength in the Lord,
he asserts leadership, and he shows compassion.
God is generous to us, and we should be generous
with others. What is your response during
difficult times?

Take
Off the Binders

This final
chapter of Saul's life shows how far he has descended
from his earlier years of hope and promise.
He inquires of the Lord, but there is silence.
A lifestyle of sin and a lack of repentance will
deafen God to our prayers -- consider the possibility
that sin in your life is hindering your walk with
God.

How to Heap Burning Coals

Despite
temptation and social pressure, David does the right
thing and shows love to his enemy, the man who hates
him. It is an example to us when we are tempted
to retaliate by hurting someone who hurt us, or
may even be continuing to hurt us. We all
deal with difficult people and need to respond in
a Godly way. God is the only one who has the
ultimate right to punish them. We need to
entrust them to God.

Give
It to Me Straight!

Everyone
gets spiritually derailed, so we need to be open
to Godly influence to get us back on track. We learn
in this text that Abigail presents an excellent
example of someone with the courage to confront
in order to prevent a grievous sin. David,
despite initially overreacting, responds to the
correction brought by this unlikely person. We need
to have the courage to confront, and be ready to
respond to the correction that God brings into our
lives.

Life
in a Cave...or...Spiritual Spelunking?
August
2
This
is the story of David, the fugitive, running from
Saul who is obsessed with killing him out of jealousy.
David hides out with a group of sympathizers in
deserts and caves, to keep from being killed by
the king. Each step in adversity teaches David
Godly character. Difficult circumstances do
not have to stop God's purpose for our lives.
We need to see our problems through God's perspective,
and learn to persevere.

It
is God's plan that we have deep, authentic friendships,
yet in today's world many do not and live isolated,
independent lives. This is a case-study on
what are true, authentic Spiritual friendships,
why they are necessary, and how to develop them.

Descent
Into Darkness

This
portion of text from I Samuel, in the Bible, reads
like a soap opera. Saul did not want to lose
his kingship, and was jealous of David. Jealousy
is a consuming force that can destroy our lives.
Giving into jealousy opens us up to obsession, evil,
and disengagement from God. By looking at
examples from the Bible, we can look to God to defend
us when others are jealous, and can also help us
identify areas of jealousy in our own lives.

God
carries out His plans in His time and in His way.
He also works through the choices
of people and nations, allowing principles of cause and
effect to weave the tapestry of time.
